Scenic Hill Shines After Riverina Skips Clean Up Griffith Day

Scenic Hill has been given a fresh lease on life thanks to the outstanding efforts of more than 120 locals who took part in the inaugural Riverina Skips Clean Up Griffith Day on Sunday, 28 September.

The community-led clean-up, which ran from 9:00am to 1:00pm, saw volunteers collect an impressive 1,580 kilograms of rubbish from the hill — some of it believed to have been sitting there for more than 50 years.

Organised by Riverina Skips, the initiative encouraged residents to roll up their sleeves and restore one of Griffith’s most iconic landmarks. Families, children, and community groups came together with gloves, rubbish bags, and plenty of enthusiasm, leaving Scenic Hill noticeably cleaner than many locals had ever seen it before.

Key Figures from Clean Up Griffith Day 2025:

  • 120+ participants

  • 1,580 kilograms of rubbish collected

  • 50+ years old rubbish removed

  • $2000 in cash prizes and merchandise given away

Hidden Treasures and a $1000 Winner

In addition to tidying the hill, volunteers had the chance to search for biodegradable prize tokens hidden across the southern side of Scenic Drive. Tokens could be exchanged for cash or merchandise prizes at Rotary Lookout, where the Riverina Skips team was stationed.

The major prize — a $1000 cash token — was discovered by 13-year-old Ryan, who made his way back to claim his victory to the cheers of all in attendance. “I can’t believe it!” Ryan said, proudly holding his prize, “I don’t know what I’ll do with it just yet!”. More participants found $100 tokens, while others went home with Riverina Skips merchandise.

A Community Effort With Lasting Impact

Riverina Skips Director, Stephen Violi, said the turnout exceeded expectations and highlighted the strong community spirit in Griffith.

“We were blown away by the number of people who showed up and the amount of rubbish collected. Scenic Hill is a place we all enjoy, and seeing it restored so beautifully was a proud moment for Griffith.”

The clean-up not only improved the appearance of Scenic Hill but also made walking trails safer and reduced environmental risks for native wildlife. Community members have since remarked that they’ve never seen the hill looking so clean.

Looking Ahead

Riverina Skips confirms that Clean Up Griffith Day will return in 2026, with hopes of drawing even more participants and building on this year’s success.

“It was so rewarding taking my sons up there on Sunday night when it was so pristine and tidy”, Stephen added “it’s a credit to our staff Alex, Lloyd, & Don, and all who helped to clean our beautiful hill”.
